YOUTH RULES

Always follow these rules, so that you can have fun and stay safe...

1. It is better to have an adult or family member with you. But if that is not the case ALWAYS tell your family where you are going.

2. NEVER go alone. It is safer to have a friend or group of friends with you (in case you get hurt or run into trouble), and it's also more fun with friend!

3. NEVER trespass. trespassing means going onto someone's property without asking permission first. This includes climbing over fences or entering any building without being told by the owner that you are welcome there.

4. NEVER go into an abandoned building, even if it is supposed to be haunted. There may be people in there that will bother you, or the building may be unstable. You can fall through the floor if it's weak. The roof may even fall in on you!

5. ALWAYS look for normal causes for the ghostly happenings. Most activity that is thought to be paranormal is caused by something that is natural and explainable. And its your job to figure it out!

6. If you bring snacks with you, never leave litter. Leave the investigation location exactly as you found it...

7. Make sure you have a cell phone or change for the pay phone, in case you need help.

8. Always take notes. Write down everything that happens....what you see, smell, hear etc.

9. If you have a camera, take as many photos as you can. You capture some evidence, and even if you don't...the photos will remind you later of the fun you had and the good job you did.

Tell an adult, take a friend, never trespass, and be careful!

RULES, RULES, AND MORE RULES! WHY?

Take a good look at the rules on the left. Seems like a lot of rules, doesn't it? So why do we need so many rules? Rules keeps us safe. Rules prevent us from getting into trouble. Every rule on this list is there for a reason. So let's examine why each rule is there...

1. Its better to have an adult or family member with you for a bunch of reasons. Adults have cars, they have money, they can drive, and they are bigger than kids or young people. If you run into strangers that are seeking to bother you or hurt you, having an adult along can protect you. And you ALWAYS want to let you family know where you are going in case you get hurt, get lost, or get in trouble. The Ghost Vigil team is made up completely of adults, and even we tell our families where we are going...just in case!

2. So why not go alone on an investigation? Well, everyone's heard of the buddy system, and the idea that "two heads are better than one." If you get hurt, lost, or in trouble...you'll be in much better shape if you have a friend or friends with you to make sure you get some help. Plus, if you see or hear a ghost, people will be more likely to believe you if more than one person saw or heard the ghost. Again, the Ghost Vigil team is made up completely of adults, and we follow this same rule.

3. Trespassing is against the law. This should be reason enough for this rule. But keep in mind that if you go into a property where you are not supposed to be, the person who owns that property might become afraid and confront you. And that's when people get hurt. Trespassing also reflects badly on all paranormal investigators. When you trespass, you hurt everyone's chances of getting to investigate that location in the future. The Ghost Vigil team has never trespassed, and will never trespass.

4. Abandoned buildings are sometimes home to homeless people, people in trouble with the law, or other people who might bother or hurt you. And usually, a building is abandoned for a reason...for instance, its about to fall down!

5. Being a good investigator means not assuming that everything is a ghost or caused by a ghost. If you assume everything is a ghost, people will stop believing you. They might see you as "silly" or just a "scared kid." Figuring out that something you saw or heard was not a ghost is part of the fun...and the challenge of looking for ghosts.

6. Not leaving trash around is self-explanatory. If you ever hope to investigate that location again...or for anyone else to get to investigate it in the future, you don't want to leave a mess.

7. Having a cell phone or money to make a phone call is a safety issue. What if you get a flat-tire, your friend breaks his arm, or you get lost. You need a way to call for help!

8. and 9. Taking notes and photographs allows you to record everything you've experienced on your investigation. It keeps you from forgetting the details, and when other investigators look at your results they will take you much more seriously if you have taken good notes. The Ghost Vigil team always takes notes...and plenty of photos!
