YOUTH RULES

Always follow these rules, so that you can have fun and stay safe...

1. It is better to have an adult or family member with you. But if that is not the case ALWAYS tell your family where you are going.

2. NEVER go alone. It is safer to have a friend or group of friends with you (in case you get hurt or run into trouble), and it's also more fun with friend!

3. NEVER trespass. trespassing means going onto someone's property without asking permission first. This includes climbing over fences or entering any building without being told by the owner that you are welcome there.

4. NEVER go into an abandoned building, even if it is supposed to be haunted. There may be people in there that will bother you, or the building may be unstable. You can fall through the floor if it's weak. The roof may even fall in on you!

5. ALWAYS look for normal causes for the ghostly happenings. Most activity that is thought to be paranormal is caused by something that is natural and explainable. And its your job to figure it out!

6. If you bring snacks with you, never leave litter. Leave the investigation location exactly as you found it...

7. Make sure you have a cell phone or change for the pay phone, in case you need help.

8. Always take notes. Write down everything that happens....what you see, smell, hear etc.

9. If you have a camera, take as many photos as you can. You capture some evidence, and even if you don't...the photos will remind you later of the fun you had and the good job you did.

Tell an adult, take a friend, never trespass, and be careful!

RESOURCES FOR PARANORMAL YOUTH INVESTIGATORS.

If you want to be a knowledgable and successful ghosthunter, then your first step is to read the materials here on the Ghost Vigil Youths website. But that is only the beginning! There are many more resources available to you than just this website!

GHOST VIGIL - First of all, you have the main Ghost Vigil website and the members of Ghost Vigil as a resource. On our main website we have a wide variety of free resources that you can use:

Many of these resources are located on our Message Board. And our message board is where you can access our Investigators. We have an active message board, and if you need an answer to a question...post your question on our message board. You are sure to receive an answer.

BOOKS TO READ - You can't overestimate what you can learn about the paranormal by reading books. Reading just one of these books really isn't enough. There is not just one book that has ALL the answers. You should read a variety of books in order to get several points-of-view or opinions about the paranormal. Here are some books we think are definitely worth reading...

Hauntings and Poltergeists, by Loyd Auerbach is probably my favorite book on the paranormal and ghosthunting. While it is not a ghosthunter's step-by-step process, it talks about HOW the paranormal works. That is something missing from a lot of books. Loyd Auerbach believes in something called Psi-Theory, and it is a very compelling theory of how we see and hear ghosts. Every aspiring ghosthunter should read this book.

The Ghosthunter's Guidebook, by Troy Taylor is more of a step-by-step guidebook to ghosthunting. An aspiring ghosthunter could learn a lot from this book. If you knew absolutely nothing about ghosthunting...reading this book would get you up to speed fairly quickly. Just remember that this book is a great "starting point." Don't assume all the answers provided in this book are the right ones.

Ghost Tech, by Vince Wilson is a great book on equipment, what to use, and how to use it. Ghosthunters have a bad habit of buying the wrong equipment, and then using it in the wrong way! Reading this book would put you on the right path. And the way Vince writes the book, its pretty funny in places. I highly recommend this book.

How to Hunt Ghosts, by Joshua P. Warren is another step-by-step guidebook...with a very practical approach. There are theories presented in this book I don't 100% agree with, but there is a lot to learn here as well. This would be an excellent book to read, just remember that not all the answers provided in this book are the right ones.

None of these books is more than $15, and all of them can be ordered at your local book store or on the internet. This is another reason to involve your parents or family in your interest in the paranormal. If your parents approve and support your interest, they can help you acquire the resouces you need. They might want to read these books as well, just to see what you are up to!

TAPS - THE ATLANTIC PARANORMAL SOCIETY - Most everyone is familiar with Jason and Grant, on the television show "Ghosthunters." While I watch their show for fun, watching and enjoying Ghosthunters does not automatically make you a paranormal investigator. The way the show is filmed and edited, it is not a great way to learn about how to ghosthunt. But the main TAPS website is a great place to learn. There is a great collection of Paranormal Articles there that are well worth reading.

On the main TAPS website, you can also learn about TAPS Paramagazine, Beyond Reality Radio, the TAPS Family, and a wide variety of other entertaining opportunities. I would recommend staying away from the main TAPS message board if you are attempting to become a serious paranormal investigator. The TAPS message board is fun to visit, but it attracts some fairly odd folks and has become a less-than-credible resource for paranormal investigators.

MISTRUST WHAT YOU READ ON THE INTERNET - The internet is an amazing tool for learning, but remember that literally anyone can post anything they want on the internet. A lot of what you find on the internet about the paranormal is extremely silly, incorrect, or completely misleading. People on the internet will tell you that orbs in photographs are ghosts or "spirit energy." But orbs are really just dust (and we'll tell you how to take an "orb" photo everytime, if you want!) People on the internet will post photos of ghosts that are actually fake photos created with computer software. Things are not always as they seem on the internet. So be careful using it as a source for your learning.
I've been interested in the paranormal my whole life. But I only began investigating when I was 37-years-old. If you really enjoy the paranormal and find this topic to be very interesting, then start learning now. Why wait? But try to keep in mind the simple fact that no one really has all the answers about the paranormal. No one truly understands what the paranormal is, how it works, or how to capture evidence that ghosts exist. People will portray themselves as experts, and they will tell you that they do have the answers. Be careful of these people...and let the Ghost Vigil team know if you need anything or have any questions by e-mailing us!
