YOUTH RULES

Always follow these rules, so that you can have fun and stay safe...

1. It is better to have an adult or family member with you. But if that is not the case ALWAYS tell your family where you are going.

2. NEVER go alone. It is safer to have a friend or group of friends with you (in case you get hurt or run into trouble), and it's also more fun with friend!

3. NEVER trespass. trespassing means going onto someone's property without asking permission first. This includes climbing over fences or entering any building without being told by the owner that you are welcome there.

4. NEVER go into an abandoned building, even if it is supposed to be haunted. There may be people in there that will bother you, or the building may be unstable. You can fall through the floor if it's weak. The roof may even fall in on you!

5. ALWAYS look for normal causes for the ghostly happenings. Most activity that is thought to be paranormal is caused by something that is natural and explainable. And its your job to figure it out!

6. If you bring snacks with you, never leave litter. Leave the investigation location exactly as you found it...

7. Make sure you have a cell phone or change for the pay phone, in case you need help.

8. Always take notes. Write down everything that happens....what you see, smell, hear etc.

9. If you have a camera, take as many photos as you can. You capture some evidence, and even if you don't...the photos will remind you later of the fun you had and the good job you did.

Tell an adult, take a friend, never trespass, and be careful!

NATURAL EXPLANATIONS FOR UNUSUAL EVENTS...

Most of the time, when someone thinks they are seeing or hearing a ghost, they really aren't. Most of the time there is a natural explanation for what they are experiencing. NOT every time...but most of the time. So when you believe you have encountered a ghost, or someone tells you they have encountered a ghost, begin looking for possible natural explanations for the experience.

This chart shows some of the things that could make people think they have a ghost in their house or business...or that could make people believe they have had a run-in with a ghost...

Strange things happening

Explanations

Knocking sounds

Heater, pipes or neighbors making noises

Creaking footsteps

Old floorboards contracting with temperature changes

Cold Spots

Drafts from windows or holes or cracks in walls

Ghostly lights or shadows

Lights from traffic coming through windows

Scratching sounds

Birds on the roof or mice in the walls, or their pets

Ghosts on the road

Patches of fog or smoke

Ghostly lights outside

Moonbeams, car headlights through the trees

Shadows in your bedroom

Your parents walking in the hallway, car headlights

Sometimes there is an actual haunting going on in a home or business, but the people who live or work there are so scared by it...that they begin to believe that EVERYTHING that happens is paranormal. So just because you find a natural explanation for some of the experiences they claim were caused by ghosts, doesn't mean there aren't any ghost there. Some experiences may be completely natural...while others really are paranormal.

Be aware that sometimes people do not react well to being told that what they saw or heard is something other than a ghost. If you tell them the footsteps they heard were caused by creaky boards in their stairwell, they might feel like you are calling them stupid, scared, or unreasonable. So remember to be sensitive to the fact that a person who believes he has seen or heard a ghost, really does believe it. You need to carefully consider how to tell them otherwise, if you figure out a natural explanation for their experience.

Taking a realistic and grounded approach to ghosts and the paranormal, and looking for natural explanations first, will show people you are serious about what you are doing. It will convince them that you are credible and believable, and not just some "silly kid out looking for ghosts." Plus, figuring out that something you have seen or heard was not a ghost is part of solving the puzzle...and part of the challenge of looking for answers to this great mystery.

Not everything will have an natural explanation...and that's when things can get pretty interesting!
